This building’s creation in the late 1960’s was a collaboration between its original owner Ian McNairn, a professor of fine arts at UBC, and architect Barry Downs, who along with master carpenter Aage Villadsen, revived the nearly long-gone hand construction skills of joinery, mortice and tenon, splicing and doweling, to construct a remarkable summer residence enjoyed by its family for nearly 30 years. The home’s good fortune continued in 1998, when like-minded owners with the means and imagination to visualize the property’s next phases of life, coaxed the original architect and both second & third generations of the master carpenter’s family back to their creation decades after the original commission.
